Duchess China 1888 - work in progress images

Duchess China 1888 is the last full process maker of fine bone china in Stoke-on-Trent. The images show many of the manufacturing process: mould making; shaping; handle making; bisque firing; quality control; clear glaze application and firing, plus slip moulding; decal printing; painting; gilding; decal application and finally packing.

There is a set of portraits of all of those involved in the process. Portraiture becomes a way of witnessing skill, tradition, and the human hand in making. Moving the participants from the workshop to a studio setting, brings a heightened sense of importance and reverence to each crafts person. The viewer is invited to engage with people who make the products, connecting with the materials and gestures.
