Robert has been involved with photography and bicycles since he was about 10 years old, starting with hand-me-downs; a Kodak 127 from his parents and a bike from a neighbour. Furthering his photographic interest at sixth-form, he was then accepted for the prestigious Film & Photographic Arts course at the Polytechnic of Central London (now Westminster University) and graduated with a BA Hons in 1983.
Getting sidetracked into bicycle frame-building and product design later in the '80s he also became one of the world’s youngest Reynolds 753 approved bicycle frame builders. Robert spent 21 years at both the craft and corporate level in the bicycle industry before returning to full-time photography as a lecturer and practitioner.
After a very enjoyable 4 years immersed in photography the call of bespoke bicycle building came again and Robert has been building bespoke bicycle frames and teaching others the craft for the past 14 years while continuing and developing his photography.
While he stills builds, and teaches others the art of building bicycle frames, Robert now devotes a far greater amount of time and emphasis to continuing his passion for photography. While being an early adoptor of digital imaging, Robert has over recent years redeveloped his love of analogue photography across 35mm, medium and large formats.
Over the years Robert has photographed many subjects including cycling, theatre, music, landscape & nature, products and travel. His main interest has always been in documentary photography, to show and tell the stories of people not often seen. Having worked for NGOs in India, he is now embarking on a long term project to document endangered crafts in the UK.
