The trades of tinsmithing (‘tinplate’ refers to iron which has been coated in tin) and copper working were commonly combined, the equipment that was used to carry out both trades being almost identical.
Tinplate work dates back to the early 18th century in England, while machine forming began in the early 19th century. The same tools and equipment are used for copper and zinc sheet. Tinsmiths produced a variety of products, including needle cases, candle moulds, stovepipes, guttering, pans, tankards, candlesticks, lanterns, candle safes, and tea and coffee pots. Sheet zinc was used for similar items, except for food and drink vessels.
